Students are presented with the equipment needed to make an intracellular recording from a cell that fires spontaneous action potentials (an oscilloscope, amplifier, recording and ground electrodes). They are guided through wiring the instruments together and using the set-up to record, display and measure membrane potential on the oscilloscope. The first exercises get students to think about how instrument wiring affects voltage displayed on the oscilloscope. In the last few steps students are challenged to change electrode tip placement (relative to the preparation) and/or instrument wiring to generate voltage traces displayed on the oscilloscope screen that match template traces. This lab serves as an introduction to the NerveWorks program, but is also a good for introduction to intracellular recording of membrane potential and classic Na-dependent action potentials, preparing students for an introductory physiology wet lab.\x3c/span\x3e\x3cbr/\x3e\n\x3cbr/\x3e\n\x3cstrong\x3eKey Concepts\x3c/strong\x3e: Action potentials; Differential signals; Tutorial; Use of equipment\x3cbr/\x3e\n\x3cstrong\x3eCourses\x3c/strong\x3e: Neurobiology\x3cbr/\x3e\n \x3cbr/\x3e\x3ca href=\"/search_result_details/brief/98\" class=\"node_brief\"\x3eRead less\x3c/a\x3e \x3cbr/\x3e \x3c/span\x3e \x3c!-- description --\x3e\n" }
